AEMO at the Heart of Energy

AEMO is Australia’s independent energy system and market operator and system planner. AEMO’s purpose is to ensure safe, reliable and affordable energy today, and enable the energy transition for the benefit of all Australians. Australian governments are now committed to a net zero economy for Australia by 2050 and our vision is to enable this. We have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to co-design the future of our energy systems, and our core values revolve around character, commitment, and connection. Join us as we contribute to this significant transition in the energy sector.

About the role

With more than 160 GW of new generation forecast to connect over the next 30 years, this role places you at the centre of Australia’s clean energy transition. You’ll help bring major projects to life across onshore and offshore wind, solar, hydro, batteries, storage and emerging hydrogen technologies.

You’ll work closely with network service providers, developers, investors, manufacturers, technology innovators, consultants, Government agencies and regulators—key players shaping the future energy system. Your work will involve leading power system modelling and analysis, identifying system limitations, and ensuring new generating plants meet operational requirements.

Collaboration will be essential as you partner with providers and OEMs to resolve generator model and power system issues, while working across the business to understand how system constraints and operational needs influence new connections. A critical part of the role is communicating complex technical issues in clear, accessible language that supports stakeholder decision‑making.

This is a role where the impact of your work is visible. You’ll visit the projects you’ve helped deliver, build long-term relationships across the sector, contribute to industry forums and working groups, and mentor the next generation of specialists as you grow your own professional profile.

The positions can be based in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

What you will be doing

  • Work collaboratively with network service providers, connection applicants and OEMs to assess and negotiate performance standards and support commissioning activities.
  • Undertake power system simulation and analysis to determine grid connection requirements for new large‑scale generators.
  • Assess generator connection models, reactive power plants and control systems to ensure compliance and robust performance.
  • Interpret simulation outcomes, draw evidence‑based conclusions, and provide clear technical recommendations.
  • Communicate complex technical issues clearly and effectively—both in writing and verbally—to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Enhance AEMO’s analysis and reporting methods, manage multiple concurrent projects, and actively build AEMO’s reputation as a trusted partner across the energy sector.

What you will bring to the role

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline supporting power systems analysis.
  • Proven experience leading or contributing to technical project teams, delivering high‑quality outcomes with a pragmatic, service‑oriented approach to problem solving.
  • Demonstrated capability in generator connection processes, including assessing and resolving generator and power system performance issues, and understanding the technical, commercial and reputational considerations involved.
  • Strong understanding of the electricity industry, including NEM operations, generator behaviour, network constraints, and the technical issues impacting large‑scale infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex engineering concepts into clear, accessible language for non‑technical stakeholders.

In return some of our benefits to you

  • Flexible working: work from home, part time, job share, hybrid options, and additional leave options
  • Professional development via projects, industry networks, job rotation, study assistance and more.
  • Give back with up to 4 days of volunteering leave per year.
  • Reward your hard work with annual performance bonuses (subject to eligibility).
  • Embrace a healthier you with our wellness program, discounted health insurance, gym perks and our comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
