Sydney Local Health District is seeking a highly motivated Orthopaedic SRMO (Senior Resident Medical Officer).

What you will be doing:

General

• The development of an understanding of the practice of Orthopaedic management of various bone, joint and soft tissue pathologies.

• Inpatient Care

• Daily ward rounds of each patient in the Unit.

• Involvement in teaching of junior Trainees.

• Careful documentation in the case notes of patient progress (and tests, etc).

• Responsibility for communication with other surgical Trainees/ AMO about any relevant change in patient’s condition.

• Fully admitting or at least examining all new admissions.

• Responsible for ordering and chasing results of all appropriate investigations (either self-initiated or AMO-initiated).

• Discharge planning, together with patient and paramedical staff and family.

• Ensuring appropriate post-discharge follow up is arranged.

• Supervising discharge summaries and communication with AMO.

• Liaise with and counsel family or guardians of patient as required.

Operating theatres

• Performing surgical procedures as directed by the AMO and under their supervision.

• Acts as first or second assistant to the AMO unless otherwise instructed. Preparation of all relevant x-rays or scans for theatres prior to commencement of any procedure. Details of operative findings and operative procedure must be clear and accurate.

• Undertaking relevant accurate documentation on patient notes.

• Outpatient care

• Assessment and management of patients in Orthopaedic Fracture and Elective clinics.

• Assessment of Unit patients in the Emergency Department.

• Consults

• Review patients as requested by other surgical or medical departments.

• Relevant AMO notification of all patients under their care.

• Surgical medical officer shifts

• Participation in after-hours on-call roster.

• Supervising JMOs and Surgical Trainees

• Daily ward rounds with resident staff.

• Responsibility for ensuring tests are ordered and results checked.

• Ensuring quality control of resident staff in clinical clerking.

• Teaching

• Teaching junior staff and medical students on the wards in theoretical and practical aspects of patient management.

• Attendance at meetings is compulsory.

• Attending/organizing unit seminars, meetings, etc

• Surgical Trainees are expected to organise/ present at unit meetings as directed by the AMOs.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

The RPAH Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides a comprehensive range of services on an inpatient, ambulatory and outpatient basis, providing expert care for trauma and elective presentations. There is a close working relationship with other specialties such as Rheumatology, Geriatrics, Radiology, Emergency Department and other Surgical Specialties.

The department has particular expertise in complex joint replacement surgery and advanced bone and soft tissue tumour care, but also offers comprehensive upper and lower limb surgical services to the community. The department is active in a range of clinical research activity closely integrated with clinical practice and teaching activities as part of the RPAH Institute of Academic Surgery

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Minimum 2 years clinical experience, JMO must have worked in an Australian hospital for at least 12 months.
  3. Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment.
  4. Demonstrated clinical experience and interest in Orthopaedics.
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  7. Evidence of continued professional development and commitment to self- education.
  8. Professional attitude, flexibility in work role and commitment to participate in after-hours and on-call rosters.
