Part Time position (2 days per week) with the option to fulfill a full-time position working as a Registered Midwife for the remaining 3 days.

The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Midwife Educator – Postnatal Unit available for a passionate, motivated and experienced Midwife. This position will report to and work closely with the Midwife Unit Manager – Postnatal Ward and network more broadly with the Midwife Educator- Birth Unit, hospital Education and Quality teams.


We seek an experienced midwifery educator who can make a meaningful contribution to supporting excellence in Postnatal Unit clinical midwifery practice. The Midwife Educator (ME) is a pivotal position within the clinical area supporting evidence based practice and the development of the novice clinician. Additionally, the ME has an integral role in consulting and advising on the clinical component on both the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery and the Bachelor of Midwifery Programs.


The successful candidate will be capable of using advanced clinical skills, proven teaching methods and superior communication skills to drive improvement in nurse education and evidence based practice. They will be expected to show initiative and flexibility in their approach to the role, with a high regard for professional and clinical standards. Demonstrated experience and success in preceptorship and other teaching roles will be highly regarded.


The position acts as an expert consultant and advisor and works closely with other senior staff to demonstrate and teach clinical practice skills to midwifery staff, working with them to develop competency in patient evaluation and care.


You will be a clinician that is able work independently as well as in a team and will have demonstrated abilities in maternal education, programme development and planning.


The Department

Our Women’s Health Unit is a 43 bed post/antenatal/gynaecology ward with 7 birthing suite rooms. Supporting this service is a 7 bed level 2 Special Care Nursery.

As a Midwife Educator your responsibilities will include:

  • Working with the MUM and Clinical Development Coordinator to support our commitment to high level education and training.
  • Coordination, clinical support and facilitation of undergraduate and post graduate students of Midwifery programs
  • Orientate and complete induction of new staff, including roles and responsibilities.
  • Take on leadership role in providing hands on educational support and clinical teaching to the Postnatal Unit team, graduate midwives, and students.
  • Assist with competency assessments, learning plans and in-service programs.
  • Promote a high standard of evidence based midwifery care to all patients, through dissemination of current best practice knowledge.
  • Ensure employee compliance to Mandatory Training requirements and completion of eLearning components.
  • Participate in policy and procedure development, implementation and compliance.

The ME will be required to work as part of the ‘Norwest Education Team’ by participating in and supporting Hospital Wide Education and Quality programs for current and new staff.


Essential Criteria:

  • Registered Midwife AHPRA registration
  • Minimum 8 years senior Midwifery (with min 5 years Postnatal Unit experience)
  • Certificate IV Workplace Assessment & Training (TAE)
  • Masters of Education
  • Experience teaching and supervising students and novice midwives/nurses
  • Strong preceptorship and mentoring skills
  • Demonstrated innovation in education program design and delivery using evidence based practices
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Demonstrated quality improvement activities and policy review/development skills
  • Intermediate computer skills

Desirable Criteria:

  • Masters in Maternal Health
  • Academic teaching experience
